"He was a servant's servant." - Bro. Al Henson
Today was a day of rejoicing and sorrow. A day that took life, and put some things in perspective. A day that made you stop and consider what you would leave behind, and what in this world was really important. It was a day of celebration, and a day of sadness, as we said goodbye to a faithful servant and friend.
When my family first arrived at Lighthouse 28 years ago, Bro. Billy Shoemake and his family were some of the first people we met. He was one of those who was always there, always serving and helping others. Years later, when I become a principal at Lighthouse, he came on staff to help around the property. Not looking for a title, or something out in front of others, he simply came to serve. He chose to step out of retirement to help clean and maintain the property. Definitely not the most glamorous job (especially if you have ever seen an elementary bathroom), but one he did joyfully and carefully, with a feather-duster sticking out of his back pocket.
While he was cleaning, we would often chat about the "stuff" of life, God's Word, our health, and our families. He always had something from the Lord and an encouraging word to share. No matter where he was in life, you could not help but smile as you talked with him. His joy was contagious, and he genuinely cared for those he came in contact with each day. He always sought opportunities to serve and was willing to do anything for anyone. His smile and servant's heart (and that feather-duster) are something I will never forget.
As I listened to person after person share today, this truth of his life shone through. He truly was a servant, and he genuinely lived out God's commands to serve others, and bear one another's burden. His life was a shining example of how we each should live, and it was my privilege in life to know him as a friend and brother in Christ. While he would never have said it about himself, he could have definitely said what Paul shared in I Corinthians 11:1, "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ." I can think of no better description for my friend and no better legacy for him to leave behind.
May you rest in peace Bro. Billy, may God grant your family grace, comfort, and peace during this time, and may we all be challenged to live the testimony of your life.
He was one of a kind... Your words did him honor...
